Health literacy and education for People Living in Prisons

Health literacy among People Living in Prisons (PLP) is significantly lower than in the general population. Research shows that PLP face a higher incidence of mental health conditions and have a greater risk of contracting communicable diseases, such as Hepatitis B and C as well as a range of sexually transmitted infections. Custodial staff and those working with prison services often lack the training and resources needed to effectively address health-related challenges within prison settings.

Health Education Resources

Recognizing these gaps, the PARTNER project was established to provide both PLP and prison staff with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to improve health awareness, prevention, and management in correctional facilities.

Moreover, within the criminal justice framework, enhancing health education supports PLP’s successful reintegration into society post-release.
